SUKOHARJO – The Community Service Team (PKM) of Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta developed an innovation in the form of an organic waste shredder machine as a more environmentally friendly waste management solution at Pondok Pesantren Hubbul Khoir, Sukoharjo Regency. This program aims to enhance the effectiveness of organic waste processing while also supporting the development of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) or maggot farming as part of implementing a green economy through appropriate technology.

The implementation of the program is driven by the high amount of organic waste generated from kitchen activities and daily activities in the pesantren’s dormitory environment. So far, most of the organic waste has not been utilized optimally, which has the potential to cause negative impacts on the environment. In fact, organic waste has utility as raw material for Black Soldier Fly larvae feed, which has economic value.

Through research conducted by the PKM team of the Electrical Engineering Study Program at UNS under the leadership of Ir. Sutrisno, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., an organic waste shredding machine with a capacity of around 50 kilograms per hour has been successfully developed. This machine is capable of producing more uniform shred sizes, making it easier for BSF larvae to consume the feed. The presence of this technology makes the process of organic waste processing faster, more efficient, and supports the increase in maggot farming productivity.

In addition to providing appropriate technology, the UNS team also conducts training for pesantren managers and students. The materials provided include the operation of shredding machines, Black Soldier Fly cultivation techniques, the preparation of standard operating procedures (SOPs), and assistance in implementing a sustainable organic waste management system. Through this approach, it is expected that human resource capacity will increase while also creating a more integrated waste management system in the pesantren environment.

The results of the program implementation show that the use of shredding machines can reduce dependence on manual shredding processes, increase the efficiency of organic waste processing, and produce maggots that can be utilized as an alternative feed with economic value. By applying the concept of a circular economy, organic waste is no longer viewed as an environmental burden, but rather as a resource that can add value to the pesantren.

This program also provides educational benefits for the students through the introduction of appropriate technology, the development of an environmentally-based entrepreneurial spirit, and the implementation of sustainable waste management. The collaboration between universities and Islamic boarding schools is expected to serve as an example of community empowerment that can be applied in various other educational institutions.

Through this community service activity, Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta reaffirms its commitment to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This program contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education) through community capacity building and the transfer of technology knowledge, as well as SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by strengthening partnerships between higher education institutions and the community in realizing sustainable environmental management. In addition, this activity also supports the development of a green economy and the reduction of organic waste through the application of innovative technology that provides real benefits to the community.
